Most of us in the Salt Lake area know of at least one or two local farmers markets, but there are ten located in Salt Lake County alone. Below is a list of some of the more popular and less well known farmers markets. As always, we highly recommend those venues that support locally produced goods and the independent farmers that provide Utahans with exceptional food.

On Wednesday, July 6th we’ll be having our annual summer potluck dinner. Bring a dish and enjoy the great company, food, and conversation. This year’s summer potluck will be held at Liberty Park in the Rice Terrace Pavilion (located in the Northeast corner of Liberty Park).  Please note this event replaces the monthly meeting typically held at the Sugar House Park Garden Center.

We’ve enjoyed the lectures, feasted on great food, attended the field trips and chatted away many an evening, and where can we do all of that while also celebrating the hard work and dedication represented by our fellow members gardens? At The Alternative Garden Club’s Members Garden Tour of course. Keeping with the success of past member tours, light refreshments will be served at most venues. We look forward to seeing everyone for this spectacular summer event!

Where: We will meet at 2:00pm to start the tour at the home of Steve Lester and and Russ Pack. We will depart at 2:45 to go to Burton Johnson’s House. Burton specializes in growing hostas and will be selling a wide variety of hostas to the Members and their guests. At 3:45pm we will depart for the home of Shane Breeze and Chet Ricketts. At 5:00pm we will depart Shane and Chet’s home for Link Konizeski and Brit Howard’s, arriving at approximately 5:30. Directions, notes and  map can be found Here or below.

Located only 1.5 hours south of Salt Lake, Fountain Green offers one of the best lamb festivals in the West. Originating in 1932 to promote the product of the local sheep industry, the annual celebration continues, involving the entire rural sheep-herding community of Fountain Green. Besides crafts, races, talent shows, and dances, the festival’s legacy is best exemplified by the afternoon meal of lamb roasted for 12 hours in special sandstone-lined pits, a cooking design and method used over 100 years ago.

Mark your calendars for this year’s annual iris & daylily sale/auction, scheduled for Saturday, July 30th. The annual iris/daylily sale is an event that many look forward to each year, and for good reason. This popular sale, bringing together the Utah Iris Society and the Utah Daylily Society, provides specialists, gardeners and the general public with exclusive access to exceptional and sometimes rare iris daylily specimens. The sale/auction runs from 10:00am until approximately 1:30pm and is conveniently located at the Sugar House Park Garden Center at 1602 East 2100 South.
