Secret Tree Tip #1

June 14, 2013

Snowdrift crabappleHere’s how you can make any young tree grow 2-3 times faster:  Remove all the grass within 18 inches or more from the base of the tree.  Place a layer of bark or wood mulch, 3 inches deep, over the bare dirt (don’t put on more than 3 inches or “haystack” the mulch around the trunk, which can damage the tree).  Every week, mix 6 tablespoons of Miracle Gro in 6 gallons of water and pour it around the base of the tree.  After the end of July, omit the Miracle Gro, so that the tree will slow down for fall, but continue to provide 6 gallons of water per week until frost (this is in addition to what the lawn sprinklers provide).  You’ll find that this method will speed up the growth and establishment of even slow trees such as oaks and lindens, and it will produce abundant blossoms on flowering trees.

Tree tip, will this work or White weep spruce and well as fruit tree?

This will work on all kinds of trees. Weeping trees are kind of a special case, since they’re not really intended to grow up very much, but this method should improve their health, if not their growth rate.
