Join us for one of the most entertaining and enlightening urban touring opportunities of the summer. Even if your only interest in chickens is how they (or their eggs) are prepared, the Wasatch Community Gardens Tour de Coops is an event not to be missed. While the care of chickens in an urban setting is the focus, the tour is a great opportunity to discover the world-changing transitional and agricultural creativity exhibited right here in the Salt Lake urban landscape.

Members of The Alternative Garden Club will be meeting on the 25th at 8:00am for Dean Anesi’s celebrated breakfast at The Urban Garden Company, 365 West 800 North, Salt Lake City. Those assembled will then proceed at 10:00am to the chicken coop tour (the tour is open until 2:00pm). Individual tickets are $10.00 per person. Group rates are available at $20.00 for groups of two to six people. The tour sells out completely as tickets are limited, so it is encouraged to purchase the tickets as soon as possible (see below).

From Dean Anesi:

Breakfast with the Girls

Please join Dean Anesi for a continental breakfast and some chicken viewing before the 6th Annual Tour de Coops. All Alternative Garden Club members and their guests are invited, whether or not you will be attending the tour.

From Wasatch Community Gardens:

If you have never been to a Wasatch Community Gardens Tour de Coops, make 2011 your first year. We know it won’t be your last. The Tour de Coops is a fun, affordable community event and a great way to spend the afternoon with friends.

Tour de Coops is a self-guided tour of some of the coolest urban chicken coops throughout Salt Lake City. Coop owners around town will open up their yards, gardens and coops to tour participants. It will be an excellent opportunity to check out unique coop designs and talk to folks about how they are raising their chickens, the breeds they raise and other backyard animals they have (bees, ducks, turkeys, etc…). It is also a great chance to see some very cool vegetable gardens, xeriscape/native gardens, permaculture practices, and some serious urban homesteading. This is an event that no budding permaculturalist, urban gardener or aspiring eggriculturalist should miss!

For more information regarding the tour and Chicken Week 2011 in general, please visit the page at Wasatch Community Gardens.

Dean Anesi, past President and current member of The Alternative Garden Club,  will demonstrate how one can create beautiful, festive centerpieces from inexpensive materials.  AGC Members were fortunate to witness Dean’s creativity at this time last year, and by unanimous request, he has again consented to show us his expertise and “tricks of the trade” in creating beautiful centerpiece designs.

Dean is a professional landscape designer and owner of The Urban Garden Company, Inc.  He is a “consummate host” and his experience as a floral designer includes working at Salt Lake City’s well know Every Blooming Thing. Dean’s work may also be seen at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts biennial exhibition Art In Bloom, and at his home where he often entertains.
